Is there scientific evidence for these therapies?

It varies by modality. Veterinary acupuncture has the strongest evidence base — decades of research support its use for pain management, nerve rehabilitation, and nausea control. Chinese herbal medicine has a growing body of pharmacological research. Therapeutic nutrition is well-supported. Homeopathy has a more limited evidence base, and Dr. Falk is transparent about that when she uses it. She only recommends therapies she can explain and defend scientifically.

Will integrative care interfere with my pet's current medications or treatments?

Potentially, yes — which is why Dr. Falk always reviews your pet's full medication list and treatment history before making any recommendations. Some herbal formulas can interact with conventional drugs. She coordinates directly with your primary veterinarian and any specialists to ensure all therapies are compatible and complementary.

Do I need a referral from my primary veterinarian?

No referral is required. You are welcome to contact Dr. Falk directly. That said, she strongly encourages ongoing communication with your primary vet and will reach out to them (with your permission) to share her findings and care plan. Integrative care works best as a collaborative effort.

Does Dr. Falk replace my regular veterinarian?

No. Dr. Falk sees herself as a specialist collaborator, not a primary care provider. She does not perform routine wellness exams, vaccinations, or emergency care. Your primary veterinarian remains your pet's first point of contact for general health needs.

What should I bring to the first appointment?

Please bring all prior medical records, recent lab work, imaging reports, and a complete list of current medications and supplements. The more complete the picture, the more useful the consultation. Does acupuncture hurt?

Accepted Answer

Most patients tolerate acupuncture very well. The needles used in veterinary acupuncture are extremely fine — much thinner than hypodermic needles — and insertion is typically not painful. Many patients become visibly relaxed or even drowsy during treatment. Occasionally a patient will react to a sensitive point, but this is brief and mild.

It is also used for vestibular disease, chronic pain syndromes, and as part of palliative care.

Dr. Falk uses only herbal products from suppliers with rigorous quality testing and verified ingredient sourcing. She does not use raw herbs of unknown origin. Can I just buy herbal supplements at a pet store?

We strongly advise against self-prescribing herbal supplements without veterinary guidance. Dosing, product quality, and herb-drug interactions are real concerns. Many over-the-counter pet supplements are poorly regulated and may contain inaccurate ingredient amounts. A prescription from a trained veterinary herbalist is meaningfully different from a retail supplement.
